Artist's Statement

Heather Balchunas, originally from Westfield, MA, received her BFA in illustration from Massachusetts College of Art in 1997. Some of her artistic influences include Georgia O’Keefe, Kandinsky, Edward Hopper, and Brian Froud. This eclectic array of styles motivates, inspires, and fuels her curiousity to broaden her horizons in her craft. Being active in the art community is an essential part of that growth as an artist. As a freelance graphic designer/fine artist, she has painted murals for private residencies, created sets for theatrical production, and designs promotional pieces for local businesses. Her personal mantra is art evolves more fluidly when its collaborative process. Whether it is theater, set design, or painting, one creative process influences another. Despite the many creative outlets, drawing and painting is still Balchunas’ first love; all while still keeping open the process and sparks of serendipity that drives her work.
