Artist's Statement

I make furniture with a CNC router, which is a kind of robot. Using a robot makes some things about the process easier, like being able to cut wood in precise ways. That frees me to explore new ways of making furniture that build on top of those strengths as well as the strengths of traditional techniques. I have flattened wood with a handplane before mounting it on the CNC, and I have inlaid wood with the CNC and hand-carved it with carving gouges. The CNC is a powerful tool, a relatively new one, but it is still like other tools. It is something to leverage and wrangle, to figure out and become excellent at and make something. That is what I try to do.
