Artist's Statement

Katie is a Somerville-based artist who uses art as a powerful way to be present in a place. In a joyful and meditative practice, she brings her sketchbook with her to places familiar and new: the farmer’s market, the woods, a concert, a kitchen, a window. She uses ink, gouache and watercolor to more carefully see the light, people and forms that surround her, and works loosely, her pieces adapting to the movement of these elements.

In one of her recent bodies of work, Katie brought a small kit of gouache paints with her to hike the 272 miles of Vermont’s Long Trail. She produced a series of paintings that were all made on the trail. She used water collected from nearby streams, lakes, or rivers, further grounding her practice in the place she was painting.

Right now, Katie is working full-time as an engineer, and is learning lots of things. Among these: how to grow as an engineer, how to grow as an artist, and how to carve out a creative practice in and around her engineering work. She is always eager to hear stories of how other artists have woven their creative pursuits into their lives.
