Artist's Statement

Artmaking has the capacity to renew me, activate my senses, enliven me, distract me, and provide an escape. Painting is a relaxing yet energizing counterbalance to the cognitive demands of being a physician. I can easily get lost within a canvas, and my time painting is when I subconsciously process emotions, thoughts, and concerns that might come from caring for patients or other life events. When I paint, I escape my thinking brain and allow the inner joy I derive from colors, shapes, and lines, to drive my actions. This joy transfers to the canvas as an energetic, colorful style of painting. The large-scale formats of big-sized canvases provide me with liberating expanses of space for my intuitive process. Small canvases allow the exploration of new themes. Many of my paintings are an explosion of color and movement, canvases large and small covered with rich, dynamic, layers of mixed mediums including acrylic paint, graphite, oil pastels. As they evolve, I connect with this seemingly random yet cohesive motion and exuberance of each canvas and hope that others will also find connection. I hope that my art will bring joy to others just as the act of artmaking does to me.
