Artist's Statement
Brenda Star first gained wide attention with large columnar works made with or covered by cement and cement-like materials, compact forms whose dense surfaces are rubbed with layers of pigment. She has also made work that uses linear, lyrically convoluted forms curving through space and cast in bronze, with patinas of shifting color.
Brenda's recent work refers to our senses and to the twisted, convoluted mapping of space. Her concerns have consistently centered around how we read verbal and visual language, and how these understandings do and don't cross cultures and time.
She has exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and the Newport Art Museum in Rhode Island.
