Artist's Statement
I’ve always said, “I want to be a painter when I grow up.” In 2023 I had a baby and in 2024 I turned 40. I decided I was grown up and I’d better get going on this ambition! This turning point in my life allowed me to freely make things that bring me joy without the self-critical eye of my younger self.
I am inspired by the 80s and 90s color palette of my youth, graffiti, and what looks “cool” to me: neon, bright colors, pink, eye-catching combinations of shapes and hues, and a "more is more" aesthetic. Every piece begins with a minimal sketch that I build up layer by layer until it achieves balance and contains its own internal logic. I use an intuitive sense of color and composition and treat the process as an experiment. My time spent making art is a luxury so I make sure it brings me joy and always hope that others will feel the energy and fun that I feel while creating a piece. These works are meant to connect with the viewer's inner child, to invite discovery the longer one looks, and to elicit a sense of play and imagination.
