Artist's Statement

What constitutes a "self", truly?

This question quietly and persistently eats at me in every part of my life, therefore informing the way I create. There are two important parts to consider: the self and the truth.

Currently, my main medium is analog film and my muse is myself. Paradoxically, the external self I capture is just a multilayered physical expression of several internal states of being that comprise me. Even though I am a conscious self, I don’t have full access to the various underlying aspects that influence me. I find self portraits and hand processing to be a means of communication and discovery.

The self captured in my work is ultimately an essence, an intuition, a reflection (often literally and figuratively), a state of being.

I find these collection of beings to fall under the umbrella of my artist persona “parallelstateofgrace”.
