Artist's Statement
This era of Covid has imposed a significant period of semi-isolation on many of us. For me, a relationship to my daily environment deepened in a new, intimate way. I mined the life around me for meaning and continuity and because I was far from my Somerville studio, my canvas size shrank as the abundance of life within view grew. Being extraordinarily lucky to quarantine by the ocean, I drew solace from company of shorebirds, especially piping plovers whose life cycle I could observe over time. With the end of quarantines and semi-normality restored, I found my interests in the endangered plover and the accompanying ocean still ripe for exploration. This painting is a moment of communion with another creature in solitude.
