Artist's Statement

For several years I have had the privlege to photograph Boston Roller Derby.  I knew nothing of the sport except the 1950's version of hair pulling, elbowing, pushing, and tripping.  Today's sport has many rules to make the it a real sport that takes skill, strategy, strength, persistence, team work, finesse, and many other athletic abilities.  It is complicated, intense and made up of women of all sizes and shapes who love the sport, are very good at it and who respect and care for each other.  It is a wonderful game to watch and it takes time to understand.  I hope to convey in my photographs that love and its intricacies.
