Artist's Statement
My art practice includes traditional and experimental processes in drawing and painting. I build on the formal applications of drawing and painting such as composition, perspective, shading, and proportions with distortion and applied observations. Heavy dark fields of graphite or charcoal are often present in my drawings, alluding to the void of outer space, creating and isolated atmosphere/context in the picture plane. My drawings focus on societal behaviors as cultural shifts unfold, representationally depicting figures emerging from darkness or fluidly engaging with one another, and abstractly expressing concepts through emotive lines, movement, and materials. Contrastly, my paintings portray the natural world with unworldly color palettes. Striking a balance between representation and abstraction, my boldly colored paintings glorify the indifference of nature, presenting the pristine beauty of environment and place, without obstruction.
