Artist's Statement

Valerie Prosper Imparato is originally from Haiti, and has lived all over the world - from Maryland to Johannesburg, Madrid to Nairobi.

Imparato's aesthetic draws from the diverse cultural influences in her upbringing, and that contrast is often reflected in the melding of different artistic styles within the same piece. The work is bold and bright, a nod to East-African and Caribbean art. Imparato's work honors the marginalized and forgotten. She has most recently been focusing on public art projects depicting Black womanhood, as well as a collection of work about grief and motherhood.
