Artist's Statement
Denise D. Price is a paper engineer, illustrator, paper artist, and independent publisher. Her art includes ephemera, illustration, paper sculptures, and pop-up engineering. Some of her work is one-of-a-kind, while others are reproduced commercially, such as her pop-up book of Boston.
Paper engineering brings an exactness to her art. Whether the intended piece is abstract or familiar, the engineering involved in making it move into three dimensions is a key focus for her. Working in such a medium transforms the experience from that of a passive 'Viewer' to an active 'Participant.' The art does not fully come to life until the participant engages with it, creating a moment of surprise and interaction that is central to her work.
Beyond pop-up books, her passion for storytelling extends to her publishing business, which focuses on books that incorporate a hands-on craft element at the end. These interactive components allow readers to engage more deeply with the stories, merging creativity with learning.
Watch for the Movable Icons Series, set to be released in April 2025, where stories of inspiring individuals and places are paired with a unique craft to bring their legacy to life.
