Artist's Statement

Ariel Matisse is a metalworker and sculptor working out of the Artisan’s Asylum, a makerspace in Somerville, MA. She grew up in a family surrounded by art and artists. Her mother is the artist, Linda Hoffman, her father, Paul Matisse, is a creator of musical sculptures, and her great-grandfather is the French painter, Henri Matisse. After her schooling, she didn’t follow into the arts, but entered the horse world focusing on dressage becoming a competitive rider for the next 12 years. In 2015, she left the horse world and returned to art. In her Tempo Series, she combines steel and bronze to make small sculptures mounted on beautifully finished pieces of wood. These finely-limbed abstract depictions of energy and balance derived originally from her years as a dressage trainer, showing horse and rider how to recycle the energy to create new movement. She also makes wire figures, elaborate trees, and finely wire-drawn animals and portraits.
