Much of Athena's work uses historic binding methods to convey contemporary meaning. Her pieces are often based on traditional binding styles, but incorporate personal content and are constructed in a way that challenges both the artist and the viewer. She works predominantly in paper-based materials, leather, wood, and metals.
In her work, Athena turns to the tactile for inspiration – utilizing traditional materials and methods in non-traditional applications, she works toward a sense of grounding. At a time when personal art and expression feels of little consequence, these materials help to serve as a physical and spiritual tether.
