2024 Open Studios Event

Somerville Open Studios 2024 will take place on Saturday + Sunday, May 4-5, 2024, from 12-6 pm each day, at artists’ studios and homes throughout Somerville.

The SOS First Look Show at the Somerville Museum will be open from April 11 through May 11, 2024.

For the first time in five years, SOS will hold a fashion show, now called Artwear. The show will be held on Thursday, May 2, at the Crystal Ballroom in Davis Square. Doors will open at 6 pm, with the show starting at 7 pm.

We will have even more group exhibits at various locations around Somerville, listed below.

Exhibits and other events

As in prior years, SOS 2024 will include exhibits and other events that showcase Somerville artists. All SOS events and exhibits are free of charge.

  • SOS 2024 First Look Exhibit

Somerville Museum • 1 Westwood Road
    Thursday, April 11  – Saturday, May 11, 2024

This show is open to all 2024 SOS registered artists. We strongly recommend viewing this artist choice non-juried group show – many studio visitors plan their trip based on what they see here. A great sampling of works by our member artists.

    Pre- and post-SOS hours:
Thursdays 2-7 pm, Fridays 2-5 pm, Saturdays noon-5 pm

    SOS weekend hours:
(exact hours tentative. Please check www.somervillemuseum.org for most updated information)
Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5, 11 am – 6 pm

The Somerville Museum is fully accessible, with an elevator at street level.

(For information on submitting art to this show by April 1, see our call for art.)

  • Artwear: The SOS 2024 Fashion Show

Crystal Ballroom • 55 Davis Square
Thursday, May 2, 2024 • Doors open 6 pm, show begins at 7 pm

The term Artwear refers to clothing and other wearables designed as conceptual or fine art. Artwear operates outside of the boundaries normally presented in fashion to favor an approach that prioritizes style and vision.

In past years, SOS has provided the public with a fashion show titled Beyond the Pattern to kick off open studios weekend. This show made it possible for textile artists to be included in open studios in a way that was more conducive to their art form than a studio opening or a gallery.

This year, the SOS fashion show will be held at the Crystal Ballroom in Davis Square on Thursday, May 2nd. The Crystal Ballroom is directly above the Somerville Theatre. Doors open at 6pm for cocktail hour with the show beginning at 7pm. The venue will have a full bar and runway seating. The event is free for the public to view original textile art by Somerville artists!

For more information, including a list of participating designers, please visit the Artwear page. If you’d like to participate, see this page.

  • SOS 2024 Volunteer Small Works Show

Forge Baking Company • 626 Somerville Avenue
    April 12 – May 20, 2024
Opening reception: Thursday, April 18, 5:00-6:00 pm

The SOS 2024 Volunteer Small Works Show will display small works of art by the people who work hard to make Somerville Open Studios happen every year.

(Are you a current or recent SOS volunteer interested in submitting work to this show? See our call for art. Deadline is April 2.)

  • SOS 2024 Inside-Out Gallery Show

CVS Windows • One Davis Square
    April 19 – May 20, 2024

This year’s Inside-Out Gallery show will celebrate the silver anniversary of Somerville Open Studios, with artists reflecting on what SOS has meant to them over the past 25 years.

(For information on submitting work to this show by April 1, see our call for art.)

  • SOS 2024 Locavore Shows

This year, SOS will present three small Locavore group shows at various locations around Somerville.

At Neighborhood Produce, 691 Broadway in Ball Square, the theme is Community. The show will be displayed in the store window, so you can see it from the sidewalk at any time from April 19 to May 12.

At Scritches & Boops, 62c Summer Street, the theme is Art Unleashed: art that dogs will enjoy! The show will be up from April 26 to May 10, Wednesdays through Sundays, 11 am to 7 pm.

At the Somerville Public Library, 79 Highland Avenue, the theme is The Book As Art: Unbound. We’ll show art that uses the book as content and/or medium to explore and transform our idea of what a book can be. The show will be on display from May 1 – 29 during regular library hours.

(Are you a registered SOS artist interested in submitting work to any of these shows? Then please read and respond to our calls for art. Deadlines range from April 1 to April 12.)
