Artist's Statement:
Beth Galston is a sculptor who builds architectural-scale environments based on an interest in light and the quality of space. Using delicate materials – scrim, metal mesh, resin, shadows, plants – Galston creates multilayered spaces through which viewers move and interact. For over twenty years she has built a diverse body of work including sculptural installations and objects, large scale public sculptures and collaborative multi-media performances. Her pieces create a sense of place, a moment of magic and transformation. Beth was born in Los Angeles and lives in Carlisle, MA. She received a Master’s degree in environmental art from MIT’s Center for Advanced Visual Studies, where she was also a Fellow for five years. Her installations have been exhibited nationally, including Cynthia-Reeves Gallery, NYC; Wave Hill, NYC; Yeshiva University Museum, NYC; Lehman College Gallery of Art, NYC; Institute of Contemporary Art, ME; Currier Gallery of Art, NH; Brattleboro Museum, VT; Nelson Atkins Museum, MO; DeCordova Museum, MA; Rose Art Museum, MA; Pittsfield Museum, MA; and MIT Museum, MA. Galston recently created a large-scale luminous environment for the Provincetown Art Museum. Outdoor public works include: “Color Walk,” Mesa Arts Center, AZ; “Serpentine Fence,” Boston, MA; “Thunderbird Bridge,” Phoenix, AZ; and “Tree/House,” Socrates Sculpture Park, NYC. Beth is working on major new commissions for the City of San Antonio, TX and a Convention Center in Nashville, TN.
