Somerville Open Studios is a large event with many different facets. Here are some tips to help you enjoy
your weekend even more.
Preview the Art
Visit our website artist directory , the Volunteer Show, and the Artistsí Choice Exhibit to preview the studios and artwork. Try our mobile site (in beta) as you travel around. somervilleopenstudios.org/mobile.
Make a Plan
Map out artists you'd like to visit ahead of time. Choose artists by media, style, or neighborhood. Visit artists' home studios and studio buildings side-by-side. Returning visitors: Remember to mix in some new artists with your perennial favorites.
Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Be prepared for variable weather. Consider bringing a water bottle. And definitely bring a bag. You'll want to carry postcards, flyers, and that great art you purchase. Always ask before bringing an animal into an artist's space.
Set Your Own Pace
Give yourself enough time to enjoy the art. When a piece catches your attention, spend the time to really enjoy it. Rather than trying to get to every artist, choose the ones you really want to see, immerse yourself and fully enjoy the ones you do visit.
Talk With the Artists
You are invited into the private working spaces of artists working across all visual media, across genres, styles, moods and modes of expression. The artist is present. Ask questions! What, where, when, how, why...?
Be Ready to Buy
SOS is about connecting with art and artists, and you're under no pressure to buy anything. But it's still a good idea to be prepared for that piece you fall in love with and want to take home. Bring cash or checks, as many artists will not be able to accept credit cards.
Make the most of your options. If you come to Somerville by car, we recommend that you park in one of the four free city lots and then ride the free SOS trolleys, hail a pedicab, use bike-share rentals, and walk to get around town. More info on our Directions and Parking page
